It's already December and maybe you are reflecting
on what you've accomplished, learned or didn't get
done in 2005. Some of you may have gone a step
further and asked yourself, "What's stopping me from
realizing my dreams and taking action on my goals?"
You can bet that with every unfulfilled dream or
unmet goal there is fear behind it. Fear of not being
good enough, fear of not having enough or fear of
losing what you already have. Don't worry, you are
not alone - everyone has fears, even the most
successful musicians.
Take a minute to write down your vision of a
successful career in music. Next, write down any
negative beliefs associated with this vision. Some of
these statements may look like: "What if I don't
make enough money?" "What if I can't write enough
hit songs?" "What if I can't tolerate the craziness of
the music industry?" "What if my band members get
better gigs with other musicians?"
It is important to identify and label your fears and
then do something about them. If your fear is a
negative belief, then work to change that internal
message. If your fear is something that needs action
to move through it, then take the action! This may
mean educating yourself about a particular aspect of
the music business or consulting with a music
attorney or talking with someone you view as a
mentor in the business.
This week, sign up for lessons if you don't think your
playing is good enough. Call that contact who you've
been putting off because you fear their rejection.
Remember, you can't grow unless you step outside
your comfort zone. And if you are not growing, you
are not living to fulfillment.
Happy Holidays to you and your family!! May 2006 be
filled with music, peace, fun, happiness and growth.
